NOTES: Session Two - Part II: Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium

˙ᵕ˙ Vanessa’s Notes on Thursday, July 9

God reveals His trust through Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church.

The three work together to preserve the fullness of the Catholic faith.

We are children of our mother church

  • We should desire to be in a state of grace on our deathbed

  • Martyr: someone who voluntarily dies for Christ and His truth

    • Goes straight to Heaven if in a state of grace.

    • Examples of martyr saints: Saint Maria Goretti, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Joan of Arc

  • Our lives belong to God, not to ourselves

  • Avoid temporary satisfaction

  • St. Joseph did acts of charity everyday

  • One of the precepts of the church is to provide for her needs

Examination of Conscience

  • An Examination of Conscience should be done each night

    • Write down sins so you do not forget when you go to confession

  • An exorcist asked the priests at a conference: why do your parishioners not go to confession

    • Priests do not host confessions often anymore.

    • Priests do not pray anymore

    • Priests are only “clocking in” like a normal job

Challenge: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

This week, make a conscious effort to step outside your comfort zone by extending kindness to someone you don't know. Introduce yourself to a fellow parishioner after Mass, start a conversation while waiting in line or with a cashier, etc.

Small acts of charity can become opportunities for meaningful friendship, encouragement, and even evangelization. You never know how God may use a simple conversation to bless another person or even yourself.

A few ideas to try this week:

Introduce yourself to someone sitting near you at Mass.

Welcome someone who is attending Bible study for the first time.

Compliment a stranger.

Pray for someone you meet during the day.

Invite a friend or family member to join you at Mass or Bible study.

Ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to be approachable and open to the people God places in your path.

  • Man will always distort God’s creation.

  • Dogma: truth of church that cannot be altered

  • Why should we believe traditions? Why is the Bible alone not enough?

    • Without tradition, everyone can interpret the Bible in their own way

    • Tradition is older than the Bible.

  • What authority does the Church have to teach?

    • Peter was given the keys

  • Sacred Traditions: oral teachings handed by the saints

  • Magisterium: teaching authority of the church

    • Not separate truths but confirming the one truth

    • Does not CREATE revelation

  • It is the husband’s responsibility and role to ensure everyone is in order spiritually in their household. His own, his wife’s, and his children’s.

    • Similar to Christ, he is to conserve his wife

  • Stop being silent because we are ROTTING

  • What is the sin of omission?

    • Sin by failing what we are ought to do

Trust the past to God’s mercy, the present to God’s love, and the future to God’s providence.
