St. Pier Giorgio Frassati
What We Celebrate
On July 4, the Church celebrates St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, a young Italian layman whose life demonstrates that holiness is possible in everyday life. Though born into a wealthy and influential family, he chose to dedicate himself to serving the poor, defending the Catholic faith, and growing in a deep relationship with Jesus through the Eucharist and prayer.
Frassati was known for his contagious joy, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to charity. He loved hiking and mountain climbing, seeing every ascent as an opportunity to draw closer to God. His famous phrase, "Verso l'Alto", has become a call for Christians to strive for the heights of holiness.
At just 24 years old, Pier Giorgio died after contracting polio, likely from serving the sick. Only after his death did many people discover the countless acts of charity he had quietly performed for those in need.
Since When?
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati died on July 4, 1925.
He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1987 and beatified on May 20, 1990. During the beatification, Pope John Paul II affectionately called him "the Man of the Eight Beatitudes." Learn more here.
Following his canonization in 2025, his liturgical memorial is celebrated on July 4, the anniversary of his death (his dies natalis, or "birthday into Heaven").

Reflection
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati reminds us that holiness is not found only in monasteries or mission lands—it is lived in classrooms, workplaces, friendships, and family life. He embraced adventure, laughter, and deep friendships while never losing sight of Christ. His life challenges us to ask:
How can I love God more faithfully in the ordinary moments of my day?
